Whats the difference between a legalist and one that follows the Teachings in the New testament?

Legalism is doing because you have to do it. Works are done because you want to NOT because you HAVE TO. Legalism is holding the belief that things have to be done specifically as the Bible says, no other way will work. Works are a heart condition, legalism has no heart just a have to.
