Canon MP980 All-in-one printer UO43 Error. Please Help!?

I have the MP980 printer by canon and even with ink in it i get the Error about the ink not being recognized, aka the UO43 error. I've heard this is commonly caused by defective ink cartridges. Are there other causes? Should i buy new ink? I just dont want to waste the money on ink.
